Ok post number two in this exciting (or tedious depending on your mind set) series of get to know the filth monkies. Today we dabble in the realms of art and design. Just as music is one aspect of a personalised love and hate, so is art. Both sharing that very soulful approach, be it producing or viewing. I have messed in these realms myself, though not of late which I am soon to rectify, so this experiment I'm most keen to view the results. I choose only ten for my list here. You are welcome to add more.

1. Hiroaki Samura. Ok here's a unique one to start us off. In simple terms, he is a comic artist. Though to deem him meer childs play in a comic sense would be to reap this man of one of the greatest talents I've ever seen. Blade of the immortal is where I discovered his work, and fell in love instantly. It's a style of manga that holds closer to sealism, rather than a usual cartoony appraoch. Also what I adore, is the medium usage. One page could be pure pencils, the next ink and of course the stunning cover paintings. Quite honestly one of the best there is. Examples : http://eu.art.com/asp/display_artist-asp/_/crid--10563/Hiroaki_Samura.htm (painted) http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Shrine/7283/samura/mnj_8_04.jpg (pencil) http://www.angelfire.com/anime/mangatemple/bi.html (inks and pencil).

2.Gustave Doré. Bold, dark and gothic. As simple as that. Saw his works crop up various times, ranging from Edgar Allen Poe illustrations to the Devine comedy. To me has such an incredibly rich and deep feel to the artwork that kind of draws you in. http://dore.artpassions.net/ (multitude of imagery).

3. Jack Vettriano. Another artist who's work is so vibrant to look at. Mixing a very film noir mood and extremly rich colouring, these pieces are just so wonderful to look at, and contain many a hidden emotion or scene that can be left truly to the viewer's pleasure. Also can paint the greatest femme fatales around. http://bertc.com/subtwo/gallery_30.htm

4. Gary Baseman. Illustrator and artist. The guys great at either. A style that blends utter insanity to childish cartoon monkey business. First discovered his style after viewing the Teacher's pet series by Disney (which Baseman created) and keep on his mailing list, in hopes one day his art will enter this country. Though even if it doesn't, it's still on the cards to one day visit a gallery in New york etc. to see his work live. http://www.garybaseman.com/

5. Salvidore Dali. Honestly an artist that shouldn't need much describing. His works have been parody fodder for decades, his work is synonymous with the serialist form of art, and has one of the most recognised styles around. Saw his stuff in its pure form when visiting Florida and went to one of his dedicated museums. Quite stunning pieces and an artists gloriously barmy. http://www.dali-gallery.com/html/paintings.htm

6. Arthur Rackham. A rather unique guy this one. Very much a fairy tale esque artist, what ever the piece produced. Wonderul bold lind work and very subdued colouring give at times a rather creepy feel to even the happiest of scenes. Can't recall exactly where I first layed eyes on his works, but believe it was a fairy illustration book, or an illustrated Brothers Grimm. http://www.artpassions.net/rackham/aliceinwonderland.html

7. Jhonen Vasquez. Ahhh love love love this guy. First came across his work whilst learning of the wonder that is Johnny the homicidal maniac comic. An absolute stunning goth styling, incorperating a great cartoon style mixed in. Followed every bit of work he's done, bought the merchandise and drool like a freak when I see new work. If any ones ever caught a bit of Invader Zim on Nickelodeon, that's his doings. http://jcv.toykeeper.net/JTHM/wallpaper

8. H R Giger. Now here be one fine artist. Pure sci-fi/organic at its best. He created the Alien for the self titled film and has aided other films here and there, and even having time to create a unique Mic. stand for Korn's Jonathan Davis. Some think his stuff can get a little too weird and filthy, but look past that and through some of his greater pieces and there's a real treat to discover. http://www.hrgiger.com/

9. Darick Robertson. One of those nice artists who answered my emails I sent out. Yep it's another comic artist kids. Saw his work basically in the Transmetropolitan series and just found it to be a great clean style. Very good emotions to characters and a great sense of fun to background work and very professional on the finer touches. Bonus happy note - my avatar is his doing (Spider Jerusalem is Transmet's hero/deviant). http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/categories.php?cat_id=294&page=2

10. Steve Purcell. Ah the creator of Sam & Max : freelance police. Also one of the Lucasart artist monkeys who worked on some of the greatest point n' click games ever made. I just love the almost constant caricatured approach to his art style and the pure beautiful anarchy of it all. Note : if you ever ever see The Collected Sam & Max: Surfin' The Highway graphic novel pleeeeeease tell me a.s.a.p ... the thing's an absolute bitch to find and if it ever pops up it's on ebay at a horrible price.

11. Ok was gonna be ten, but just saw a picture that reminded me how foolish I was to leave out this artist. One of the greatest gothic/romantic artists ever. William Blake. Extremely striking imagery, and an incredible style. You'll find his work, or certain imagery he produced in a lot of places, and even one of the variants of "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun" was used as a good focal point in Thomas Harris's Red dragon. Great artist and also a good poet and writer to boot. http://www.huntfor.com/absoluteig/blake.htm
