First I learn of George Carlin and now a man I have true respect for, Stan Winston. Mr Carlin was always great for such a natural standup style and clever tongue that shamed many more so called edgy comics...and as for Winston....well that one cuts to the bone to tell truth. The films that he helped shape have been some of the most iconic and easily some of my faves of al time. Puppetry and special effects have been a love of mine for many a year, from the muppets and Jim Hensons team, ILM and its use of incredibly complex comp work and of course Stan Winstons creature shop. Each a legendary team, that made mere models or pixels the thing of fright and fantasy. To create emotional bonds and nightmares in a single stitch and hydraulic. Truly the comedy and film industry have both bore a bitter blow indeed, and I for one salute both for what they brought, inspired and created for the enjoyment of all.

| Sad losses indeed, especially Stan Winston. His creature effects were second to none in modern film, and any film with his name on the credits could almost use it as a seal of quality. From the robots in Terminator, face hugging xenomorphs in Alien, or a scissorhanded Johnny Depp, he had an attention to detail and a way of injecting almost human qualities into his creations that always elevated his work beyond simple puppetry or visual effects. He'll be sadly missed. |
